ADHD Australia welcomes this week’s announcement from the NSW Government that General Practitioners will soon be able to prescribe ADHD medications for their patients, with the rollout brought forward to September 2025. This is the first phase of reforms announced by the government to make access to care more affordable and faster.
GPs will be required to undertake specific training to provide this support, which will be funded by NSW Health.
The changes will only apply to patients who have an existing diagnosis from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Further training is expected to be available next year to allow some GPs to diagnose and initiate medication.
In a further boost, the NSW Government has expanded the initiative beyond the initial cap of 1,000 participants – allowing all GPs in NSW who complete the training to participate.
Kelly Dargan, ADHD Australia Board Member, was at the announcement and spoke to the overwhelming positivity in the room. “We were all very excited in how quickly this has evolved over the past couple months since the last announcement. The expansion of the reforms is a significant step forward to ensure that GPs around NSW, particularly those in rural areas, are in a position to support their patients and broader community.”
GPs interested in participating are encouraged to sign the Expression of Interest on the NSW Health website. For more information, visit NSW Health.
Those in NSW with ADHD, including parents and carers, are encouraged to talk to your doctor about how these changes may benefit you.
